What is Copyright ©?

Copyright is a legal right licence by a creator that allows them to decide who copies, distributes, performs, or changes their original work. It protects the creator's idea and their tangible medium of expression (like books, songs, art).

An example of copyright is when Taylor Swift took down her songs from Spotify in 2014-2017 because she felt undervalued for her, and her contemporaries' work of art (AKA songs).

What is Creative Commons?

Creative Commons is an international non-profit organization that issues Creative Commons licences (CC). With a CC licence, creators can allow others to copy, distribute, or change their work, under the condition that the creator is credited in the medium of expression.

As an example, my "Victory Dance" track that I did back in the AudioTool Unit is protected by a CC-by-SA licence, which means people have the right to download, copy, or share this track, provided that they credit me for it. (so if you're on the AudioTool unit *and looking ahead at this unit 👀*, and you feel uncreative and want to copy my work, MAKE SURE YOU CREDIT MEEEEEE)(thank you 🍪🍪)

The Five Ws of the News Story

Opinion Paragraph

All works of art are automatically protected by a copyright licence, and it is absurd that Fortnite is effortlessly monetizing a work of art by not just 2Milly, but all the works by Black creators that they monetize without crediting the artists' work. Fortnite is taking advantage of all the hard work, choreography, and dedication put into every step of the dances. If they credited the original creators, as 2Milly described, "he would have worked alongside Epic Games if the company had reached out and expressed interest in using the 'Milly Rock' with full credit in the game." Although this lawsuit was unsuccessful, this debate is serving as a lesson to others to credit the original creator if they wish to share, distribute, or change their work of art. People should also check for copyright or CC licences to make sure they are giving authors the credit they deserve.
